Can Vitamin D boost testosterone in men?

Concerned about low testosterone? 

Take vitamin D supplements or get some vitamin D from the sun. Both aid in the increase of vitamin D levels in the body, and evidence says that this vitamin is beneficial to your health.  

In 2015, the American Urological Association stated that vitamin D and testosterone, the male sex hormone, had a substantial relationship. 

Vitamin D deficiency appears to be linked with reduced testosterone levels. Your testosterone levels might hypothetically plummet if you don't get enough of the sunshine vitamin. You can be irritated or not in the mood for sex. 

Your vitamin D levels may dip as days get shorter and sunlight becomes scarce. Levels tend to peak in August and dive in March.

According to studies, men who are deficient in both vitamin D and testosterone are substantially more likely to die from cardiovascular causes.

The relationship between low testosterone and vitamin D deficiency is well established, according to scientists, but it's unclear whether supplementation can help. 

A small study in Germany demonstrated that taking 600 IU vitamin D tablets every day for a year significantly increased total testosterone levels in healthy males.


Vitamin D is a necessary component for bone health and helps to prevent osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. It also helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function.

What does this have to do with testosterone, exactly? Low testosterone can mimic vitamin D deficiency in terms of signs and symptoms: for example, the erectile dysfunction and diminished sex drive found in testosterone deficit can also be caused by a sad mood produced by low vitamin D. 

Other symptoms that are similar to low testosterone and vitamin D insufficiency include:

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased bone and muscle strength

For low testosterone or vitamin D levels, it’s best to first confirm low levels through a blood test. 


It's somewhere clear that Vitamin D levels in the body can influence the levels of testosterone. It's always important to keep your vitamin levels perfect by getting exposed to sun or by taking Vitamin D supplements.

The recommended initial dose to treat vitamin D deficiency is 6000 IU (units) daily or 50,000 IU weekly for eight weeks, followed by 1000 IU or 2000 IU daily for maintenance. You can meet this intake requirement through diet or by taking a high-dose vitamin D3 supplement called cholecalciferol.
