Happy July 4th!

Independence Day is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate a long weekend full of grilled burgers and hot dogs, beer, sunshine, music, boats, fireworks, bonfires, friends, and family in modern-day America. Of course, all of these things are wonderful, and they provide us with much-needed respite and relaxation from the mental stresses of daily life.

However, Independence Day is about much more than lazy days at the lake. We know the history – the thirteen colonies declared their independence from England on July 4, 1776, an event that eventually led to the foundation of the United States – but how often do we actually appreciate how fortunate we are to live in a free country like the United States?

Here are some reasons to give our favourite summer festival more meaning and depth.

People in America have the right to worship as they like without fear of being killed, arrested, or having their businesses shut down. We are free to be open about our faith in the United States. That is something for which we should be grateful!

Countless people have served and defended our country, and some have even given their lives for the sake of all of us. A huge thanks to God and pray for all military members as well as their families, who have made tremendous sacrifices.

In general, our country is a peaceful and secure place. We are not facing civic turmoil or threats on a regular or daily basis. We must express our gratitude and pray for peace and an end to violence.

When we put our 4th of July celebration in the context of what we're truly celebrating, the day becomes much more significant and makes us feel more fortunate to live in the United States of America.
